Leaving Town, Leaving Town...

Unfortunately, I didn’t really have a “weekend adventure” for you guys this weekend. Sorry! But between the long work week and the fact that I will be driving down to Canberra this evening, I just didn’t think I had enough time to go out and do much in the way of new adventure.
Saturday was kind of a random day. I spent Saturday hanging out at the house, doing some laundry, and cleaning. Since the big City2Surf race is next weekend, I thought that I probably should get a run in to try to get into shape. Although I started out planning to run only 30-45 minutes, the weather was really nice, and I ended up running about an hour. Which is good for my training. Although I am not so sure I am going to make it another 20-30 minutes in the 14K next week. Actually, that comment is not completely accurate. My concern is that I hear that the last couple of miles is up a killer hill. So to finish out my route Saturday afternoon, I tried running up a really steep hill in the neighborhood behind me. Big mistake. What a massively steep hill! Luckily I am “done” with the training for next week’s race, which means I don’t have to run that hill again. Woo hoo!
As I was running down Military Road (the main street by my place), I thought I saw someone I recognized. As I passed by, I said hello and realized it was my friend Charlotte’s husband, waiting outside of one of the shops in my neighborhood. He waived, said hi, and I kept on my way. I passed him again later and saw that his wife was with him, but couldn’t get over to say hello. Oh well. A little while later, I was running up a different street, and saw the two of them on a street corner, waiting for the crosswalk to change in their favor. So I stopped and said hi again. We chatted for a minute, and Charlotte asked how my running was going. I told her I wasn't too confident about next week, but that I was in it for the beer and BBQ (cookout) afterwards, so no big deal. Then I took back off and continued on my route.
On my last little part of my made-up running route, I passed by a church, and ran by to see what time the service started. 10 am. Sweet! Later than the 9.30 time at the other church!
After my run, I got back home and jumped into the shower. I was in a bit of a rush, though. The Wallabies and New Zealand were playing again tonight (this time in NZ), and I was trying to get to the pub to watch the game. I was a few minutes late, but who ever heard of starting a big game at 5.30???
I grabbed a beer at the bar, and stood with a few guys to the side, since there were absolutely no seats available. The pub had a ton of people there supporting both teams. I guess since it was the two “home” teams playing each other (kind of), the pub was extra packed, as there were supporters from both sides. After a little while, I looked around the pub. There was a guy at a table not too far away who waved at me. It was Mike, the guy I had met there two weeks ago while watching the Wallabies-Springboks rugby match. So at halftime I went over and said hello to him.
I guess I just think it is kind of funny that I am getting to a point where I run into people I know when I go out places here. Obviously, it is not the same as being in Charlotte, since I usually run into people I know all the time when I am home. But running into three people I know in a 2-hour time span was pretty cool, I thought!
Now here’s the down side of going to the pub to watch rugby matches: The game only lasts about 90 minutes. After the game, the pub pretty much clears out. So with a 5.30 game time, I was home by about 8. But it was still a good day, even though the Wallabies lost tonight.
Sunday morning comes and, once again, I wake up at 6 am to the bright sunlight in my room. An hour later, I manage to get back to sleep. A couple of hours after that, I wake up to hear some little kid screaming down the hall. Finally she stops (no, I did not go out and beat her), and I fell back asleep. I wake back up a little later, only to figure out that I slept right through the first 10 minutes of the church service that I was thinking about going to. Oops. Well, I’ll go visit in two weeks… But I wanted to spend a little time at home, anyway. I need to finish my chores around the house, and I need to get packed so I can leave in a couple of hours to pick up the rental car and get out of town.
With that said, I don’t have much more to give you guys for this weekend’s post. I will probably get to Canberra too late for any pictures (it is about a 3-hour drive), but I’ll see what I can do throughout the week to let you guys see a different part of Australia.
So since I don’t really have a story to tell, I thought I would provide you with an entertaining video clip. On YouTube, there is a video you can watch of how to eat Vegemite. It’s long, though. So I found a funnier one of some American girls trying vegemite for the first time. An as FYI, no one says to “put a of it lot on there.” (You can also see from the comments that you’re supposed to spread it thin.) HA HA HA! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WS2Gzp8XgFQ
I hope everyone had a great weekend, and I will talk to you all soon!

So, Jenny, have you tried vegemite? i know the person who is willing to try poi will try most anything. I am not sure the color and texture is any improvement over the poi.
